This story is told about a pond on a farm. This pond had two ducks and a frog. It was a small pond. The ducks and the frog were the greatest of friends. All day long they would spend time together and enjoy themselves. As the hot summer days grew longer, the pond began to dry up. Soon they all realized that they would have to move. The ducks had no problem, because they could fly; but the frog…what could he do?
Finally, the three came up with a plan. The two ducks would hold opposite ends of a stout stick. The frog would clamp his mouth on to the middle of the stick. Then the two ducks would fly away, carrying the frog suspended between them by his mouth holding tightly to the stick. By this means, they could all fly to another pond.
As they were flying, a farmer out in his field looked up and saw this remarkable sight. He said, “Well, isn’t that a clever idea! I wonder who thought of it.” Immediately, the frog opened his mouth and said, “I did!”
That is an old story, but it has a lesson for us today. When good things happen to us — as individuals, as a group, as a family, or as a congregation of God’s people – they are happening because we are being lifted up. And when such things happen, we must be sure to give the credit, the honor, the glory to God. The worst thing we can do is open our mouths and try to take the credit for ourselves!
“In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 5:16).
