Luke records an episode in Jesus’ life that is often overlooked.
An argument arose among them as to which of them was the greatest. But Jesus, knowing the reasoning of their hearts, took a child and put him by his side and said to them, “Whoever receives this child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me receives him who sent me. For he who is least among you all is the one who is great.” (Luke 9:46-48)
The disciples were always arguing over who is the greatest (cf. Matt. 18:1-5; Mark 9:33-37;
Luke 22:24). They must have been shocked to hear Jesus say, “For he who is least among you
all is the one who is great.” What can we learn from this truth?
- God’s value system is different from ours (cf. Isa. 55:8, 9; 1 Sam. 16:7).
- Because the least among us is great, we should care for them (cf. James 1:27).
- A good deed toward the least among us is a good deed toward Jesus. As Jesus said,
receiving a child in His name is receiving Him (cf. Matt. 25:40). An opportunity to serve a
brother or sister in need is an opportunity to serve Christ. Remember, we are all
members of His body.
Children are a blessing from the Lord (cf. Psalm 127:3). They have been entrusted to our care.
They should be nurtured and protected.
